The first Independence Day was celebrated July 4, 1777 in Philadelphia. Why July 4? That is the date the Declaration was signed. It was celebrated with bonfires and fireworks. I did not not fireworks had such a long history in the celebration.

Here’s a shocker. July 4 was not officially declared a holiday until 1870, almost 100 years later.
