Visiting Crete – Phaistos

Although Knossos is the most famous of the Bronze Age sites, it is not the only one. Phaistos, about an hour outside of Knossos, is another. Bronze Age Crete was divided into city/states. (Greece and Italy did not unify until the late 1800’s.) It is the origin of the Phaistos disc, Since we have not deciphered it as yet, we do not know what it says. The disc is currently held in the Archaeological Museum in Heraklion.

Unlike Knossos, which has been partially restored, Phaistos is still in ruins.

Although we visited Crete in April, and it is a Mediterranean country, the mountainous terrain meant snow on the mountain tops.
