Calgary is in the province of Alberta, far to the west and adjacent to the Canadian Rockies. We took a car trip on the Trans-Canada highway and the Ice Fields Highway. Calgary is surrounded by prairies and lots of ranch. It has a very frontier vibe.
The scenery is spectacular.

Besides snow-capped mountains, glaciers, and, unfortunately, scorched trees burned by a forest fire, we also saw wildlife.

See the mountain sheep?
Next year, Bouchercon will be in Washington, D.C., a lot easier for me to reach. But the scenery sure won’t be as spectacular.
